Well it's now November which means that I am starting to feel Christmassy and already thinking of libations to partake in over the next few months. Cocktails are typically pretty high in carbs and so not very friendly when you're trying to stick to this way of eating/ drinking. I thought it might be nice to start thinking of a few alternatives. The plan is then, to put ten low carb cocktails/ drinks up over the next two weeks so you'll have lots of ideas ready for the festive season! Wish me luck...
Now I'd like to say that I first got into drinking Moscow Mules when I was in Russia last year, but that would not be true, in fact while I was there I had no alcohol at all. I actually got into them in a pretty uncool mainstream bar when I was a student. Plus anyway, they're an American cocktail, with the Russian part of the title referring only to the vodka. They are in fact also sometimes called Vodka Bucks apparently (thank you Wikipedia).
I tend to go through phases every year or so when they're my go to drink for a few months before they get replaced and forgotten about by a different one.
One thing that makes them very appealing at the moment is that they can be made with very low carbs and also can be whipped up in mere minutes making them an excellent go to drink when you're entertaining. The recipe is so simple, you basically put double the amount of ginger beer to the vodka, mix with ice and you're away!
A second thing which makes them almost perfect is that they contain no obscure ingredients meaning you can nip down to the shop just moments before guests arrive (or before you want to start drinking them alone- no shame in that) and be pretty confident that you'll be able to easily pick up all the ingredients.
Now, enough waffle, onto the important bit.
You will need:
- Two shots of vodka per person
- Low sugar/diet ginger beer
- One lime
- A small piece of ginger
- Plenty of ice
- Mint to garnish
Then to make:
- Fill your mugs with ice
- Pop your vodka and ginger beer into your mugs- half in each mug obviously you can have a bit less or more vodka but roughly stick to the ratio of double the amount of ginger beer to the vodka.
- Cut your lime in half then cut a small slice of each half to use as your garnish.
- Squeeze the rest of the lime in, again half into each mug
- If you like yours spicy, grate some ginger in with a very fine grater
- Garnish with a slice of lime and some mint- the mint is optional but it's lovely with ginger!
- Stir, lean back enjoy and pretend you're in Moscow (or America)!
