Wilderness festival 2016 essentials

My love affair with festivals is a long standing one, going to one (or more) every year for years, before falling slightly out of love with them a few years ago. We typically chose our festivals for the music but were starting to feel like the only people there that had. We then skipped a couple of years, but then after speaking to people I realised we'd not outgrown festivals, but our type of festival had just evolved. We started looking at other types of festival and after dabbling with The Big Feastival and Latitude we found Wilderness festival and everything felt a little bit like it had clicked into place. It has the right mix of everything we love, food (obviously), theatre, crafts, music and wellness activities, while still retaining a festival feel.

So, with the eve of the Wilderness festival nearly upon us, I thought I'd share my essential must do activities for this weekend.

Neals Yard Festival SOS This sounds right up my street, a workshop learning to create festival skincare essentials; facial mist, sea salt hair spray and a shower gel, all from natural, organic ingredients. I am so so excited with this one, and can't wait to share with you what I've made and how I did it!

Wild medicine walks A guided walk, by a real life medicine woman (how is that not my job?), leading people into the woods, discovering medicinal plants 'catering for everything from hangover cures, sun burn remedies...'. Let's face it, in my book, if there's anything that I can forage from the woods that will alleviate my sunburn and/ or hangovers then I need to get involved!

The Saturday night spectacle with cirque Bijou The Saturday Night Spectacle is one of my favourite Wilderness memories, grand scale theatre where everyone comes together in awe. A huge fan of similar act Cirque Du Soleil, watching it in Las Vegas, marked the longest time I've ever taken to drink a cocktail, when I looked down in the interval and realised I'd been so transfixed I'd completely neglected my drink (soon rectified once the interval began).

Wild Swimming is one of the quintessential Wilderness activities, and this Saturday is forecast to be HOT so I will definitely be partaking! There are even lakeside hottubs...

Hunter Gatherer Cook I love foraging, though I'm desperately bad at it, usually comprising of google image searches of the flowers/ edible looking plants I find and a generous helping of luck hoping that I've matched them correctly and aren't sprinkling something poisonous over my food. To learn from someone who actually knows what they're doing will be wonderful, plus once we've learnt about the plants we'll be harvesting some and using them in canapes and cocktails- cocktails, canapes and foraging- vatkinary heaven!
The Wilderness Orchestra present a tribute to David Bowie This one is closing the festival on Sunday, and I already know I will love it. A 500 odd choir, accompanying the Wilderness Orchestra, This sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it. Plus a couple of blasts from the past in the form of Charlotte Church and Kate Nash who'll be leading the choir...

Well, I could go on all evening, there's so much to get excited about, most importantly perhaps for me, the food which you know you'll be seeing lots of on here and on my social media channels so keep tuned. Let's just say the food here won't be a greasy spoon affair- think Deliciously Ella, Laurent Perrier, Petersham Nurseries, Duck and Waffle, Hix alongside long table banquets and food forums devoted to talking and debating all about food.

In the meantime, there are still some tickets so pop over here to get some while you still can, and come and say hello if you see me, I'll be the one in the lake with the natural sea salted hair nibbling on a foraged canape!

  1. This sounds so cool! Such an awesome experience. I definitely think that learning how to forage and knowing medicinal plants is a good skill. It's always good to know things the old fashioned way beyond just the internet. Sounds like a ton of fun!
